Central Otago & Southern Lakes

Central Otago is well known for its Schist Stone. There are many quarries located in the Central region and the West Coast. Schist de-laminates easily, making it ideal for paving and capping walls. Since the gold mining boom in the 1860's Schist has been used extensively throughout Central Otago to build houses, shops, barns, boundary walls and bridges among other monuments.
